The choice of material is the first and most important decision when buying a sex doll. Everything that follows — how the doll feels, how much care she needs, how long she lasts and what she costs — depends on it. How does it feel?
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is soft and springy. It yields under pressure and bounces back, which brings it close to the feel of skin. That is why the vast majority of dolls are made of TPE and why most first-time buyers start there.
Silicone is firmer and smoother. It yields less and feels slightly cooler to the touch. Its big advantage is in the details: manufacturers can cast much finer structures in silicone, such as veins, pores and wrinkles. Silicone faces therefore look more realistic, especially up close and in photos.
Care and hygiene
This is where the biggest practical difference lies. TPE is porous. It absorbs moisture and dirt more quickly, can pick up stains from dark clothing and needs time to dry after cleaning. About once a month TPE needs to be powdered to keep the skin soft and dry; without powder the surface eventually becomes slightly sticky from the oil that migrates out of the material.
Silicone is barely porous. It is easier to clean, dries faster, withstands higher temperatures (a warm bath is no problem) and does not need powdering. Anyone who wants to spend little time on care chooses silicone for this reason.
Durability
With good care both materials last for years. TPE is more prone to small tears in places that move a lot, such as armpits and groin, and to permanent pressure marks if the doll lies in the same position for long. Minor damage is easy to repair yourself with TPE glue, though. Silicone tears less easily, but a tear in silicone is harder to repair.
Weight and price
Silicone is slightly heavier than TPE at the same size, usually two to four kilos. The biggest difference is the price: a silicone model quickly costs two to four hundred euros more than a comparable TPE model. The current starting prices per material are at the bottom of this article.

If you are buying a doll for the first time and want to find out whether it suits you, TPE is the logical choice: the entry price is lower and most people find the feel more pleasant.
